Embroidery Cost & Prices (2026): Price List per Shirt, Hat & Stitch

RK Robert Krause
Owner, Battle Born Clothing & Print · Yerington, Nevada · Screen Printing & Embroidery Since 2019

Custom embroidery pricing is one of those things that shouldn't be complicated — but somehow every shop makes it feel like you need a decoder ring. Stitch counts, digitizing fees, per-thousand rates, setup charges. By the time you get a straight answer, you've already wasted an hour.

I've been running a Happy commercial embroidery machine out of our shop in Yerington, Nevada since 2019. Every logo is hand-digitized by a professional digitizer (never auto-digitized), and we embroider everything from Richardson 112 trucker caps to Carhartt jackets, and serve everyone from mining crews in the corridor to Toyota off-road clubs nationwide. Here's exactly how embroidery pricing works — what drives the cost, what you should expect to pay, and how to get the most value out of every order.

The Short Answer: What Does Custom Embroidery Cost?

For custom embroidery in 2026, expect to pay $6 a piece for the embroidery at 12–47 pieces, plus the garment itself. That covers up to 6,000 stitches. A standard left-chest or hat-front logo runs 5,000–8,000 stitches, putting the embroidery portion at $6–$9. Add the garment and a one-time digitizing fee from $18.99, and most orders land in the $15–$30 per piece range all-in depending on the blank you choose.

Battle Born Embroidery Price List (2026)

These are our actual per-piece embroidery prices for one logo location up to 6,000 stitches — the size of a typical left-chest or hat-front logo. The garment is priced separately.

The 5 Factors That Drive Embroidery Pricing

Every embroidery quote comes down to these five variables. Once you understand them, you can predict pricing before you even ask.

1. Stitch Count

Stitch count is the embroidery equivalent of color count in screen printing — it's the single biggest factor in your per-piece cost. Every needle penetration into the fabric counts as one stitch. A simple text-only logo might be 3,000 stitches. A detailed company emblem with fill areas could be 12,000–15,000 stitches. A full jacket back? 30,000+ stitches.

Industry standard pricing runs $1 to $3 per 1,000 stitches depending on the shop. At Battle Born, every piece includes up to 6,000 stitches: $12 each for 1–11 pieces, $6 for 12–47, $5.50 for 48–59, $4.50 for 60–79 and $4 for 80 and up. Extra stitches add $0.50 to $2 per 1,000 depending on quantity. So at 24 pieces a 7,000-stitch left-chest logo costs $7 for the embroidery, and a 5,000-stitch hat front runs $6. Higher stitch counts take more machine time, consume more thread, and put more wear on the machine — all of which factor into the price.

The sweet spot for most business logos? 5,000 to 10,000 stitches. That gives you enough detail for a sharp, professional result without the cost running away from you.

2. Digitizing Quality

This is where shops that care about quality separate themselves from bargain operations. Digitizing is the process of converting your logo into a stitch file — a detailed map that tells the embroidery machine exactly where to place every stitch, in what direction, at what density, and in what sequence.

There are two approaches: auto-digitizing (software does it automatically) and hand-digitizing (a skilled digitizer builds the file manually, stitch by stitch). Auto-digitizing is fast and cheap but produces inconsistent results — thread breaks, registration issues, puckering, and designs that look blurry or bloated. Hand-digitizing takes longer but produces clean, efficient stitch files that run smoothly on the machine and look sharp on the garment.

At Battle Born, every logo is hand-digitized by a professional digitizer — never run through auto-digitizing software. It's a one-time setup fee, from $18.99 for a standard logo, and the file is saved permanently for all future orders at no additional charge. Some shops charge $50–$100+ for digitizing; ours starts at $18.99 because we want repeat business, not nickel-and-dime fees. This is one of the most important parts of the process, and cutting corners here shows up in every single piece that comes off the machine.

"The pricing method you use for embroidery can shape your business's reputation, profitability, and customer satisfaction. Custom embroidered apparel prices typically include up to 6 colors per logo and up to 10,000 stitches for the first location."

3. Garment Type

Just like screen printing, the blank you choose often costs more than the embroidery itself — especially on premium workwear. Here's how popular embroidery blanks stack up:

Blank Category Popular Models Wholesale Cost
Trucker Hats Yupoong 6606, Decky $6–$9
Premium Hats Richardson 112, Outdoor Cap $9–$14
Fitted Hats Yupoong Flexfit 6277, New Era $9–$18
Beanies Carhartt, Legacy, Port Authority $6–$27
Polos Port Authority, Nike, Under Armour $12–$38
Workwear Carhartt, Berne, Ariat $22–$68

Some garments are also harder to embroider. Hats require special hooping and run slower. Heavy duck canvas needs industrial needles. Performance fabrics need stabilizer backing. These factors are built into the per-piece cost.

4. Order Quantity

Embroidery has the same economy-of-scale effect as screen printing, just less dramatic. The biggest savings come from spreading the one-time digitizing fee across more pieces. On a 5-piece order, that's $5 per hat just for setup. On a 50-piece order, it's $0.50 per hat.

The per-piece embroidery cost also drops as quantity increases because the machine setup — hooping tension, thread loading, alignment — only happens once. After that, it's load, stitch, unload, repeat. At bulk quantities of 48+, most shops offer meaningful price breaks.

The big difference vs. screen printing: embroidery has no minimum order. You can get one hat embroidered. It'll cost more per piece than ordering 48, but you're not locked into a minimum.

5. Design Complexity & Extras

Several add-ons affect your final price:

3D Puff embroidery uses foam under the stitching to create a raised effect — the premium hat look. Adds $2–$5 per piece. Works best on structured caps with bold lettering.

Multiple embroidery locations (front + back, left chest + sleeve) each count as a separate setup. Most shops price additional locations at 60–80% of the first location's cost.

Thread color changes — most shops include up to 6 colors in the base price. Additional colors beyond that may add $1–$3 per piece.

Specialty threads like metallic or glow-in-the-dark run at slower speeds and break more easily, adding 15–25% to the embroidery cost.

Appliqué and complex hooping — some projects require laser-cut fabric appliqué layered under the embroidery, or non-standard hooping setups for oversized or oddly shaped items. These add cost that varies by project. If your design involves appliqué work or a garment that doesn't fit a standard hoop, we'll quote it on a case-by-case basis.

Embroidery vs. Screen Printing vs. DTF: When to Use Each

Every method has its lane. Here's how to pick the right one:

Method Best For Cost/Piece Minimum
Embroidery Hats, polos, workwear, logos $4–$12 (up to 6,000 stitches) None
Screen Printing Large designs, bulk t-shirts $1.86–$13.76 No hard minimum (48+ recommended)
DTF Printing Full-color, small batches $5–$12 (print) None

The full breakdown is in our Screen Printing vs. Embroidery vs. DTF comparison guide. The short version: embroidery is the go-to for anything structured (hats, polos, workwear) and any situation where durability and perceived value matter most. 5 Ways to Get the Best Value on Your Embroidery Order

Simplify your logo for embroidery. Gradients, drop shadows, and ultra-fine lines don't translate to thread. A clean, bold logo with defined shapes stitches out sharper, runs faster, and costs less than trying to force a complex web graphic into stitches.

Keep stitch count in the sweet spot. For left-chest logos, aim for 5,000–10,000 stitches. For hat fronts, 5,000–8,000. Over-stitched designs can pucker the garment and look worse than a clean, efficient file.

Match the garment to the purpose. A Yupoong 6606 is a solid daily trucker hat at $6–$9. A Richardson 112 is the premium choice at $9–$14. If your crew is going to destroy them in three months, save the Richardson for client-facing gear.

Order enough to spread the digitizing fee. Starting at $18.99, the digitizing fee barely registers on orders of 24+. But on a 5-piece order, that's $5 per hat just for setup. If you know you'll reorder later, that digitizing fee is already paid — your second order is pure embroidery + garment cost with no setup fee at all.

Send vector artwork. AI, EPS, SVG, or high-res PDF files save time on digitizing, which translates to lower setup costs and faster turnaround.

CUSTOM EMBROIDERED BEANIES

How Much Does It Cost to Embroider a Shirt?

A left-chest logo on a shirt or polo is usually 5,000–8,000 stitches. Up to 6,000 stitches, the embroidery is $12 per shirt for 1–11 shirts, $6 at 12–47 and $4 at 80+. A 7,000-stitch logo at 24 pieces comes to about $7. Add the shirt itself and a one-time digitizing fee from $18.99.

So one embroidered shirt with a new logo runs roughly $12 for the embroidery, plus digitizing, plus the blank. Twenty-four company polos with a left-chest logo usually land around $28 a piece all-in. For plain t-shirts, screen printing or DTF is almost always the better value.

How Much Does It Cost to Embroider a Hat?

Hat embroidery uses the same price ladder plus a $1 cap charge: $13 a hat for 1–11, $7 at 12–47, $6.50 at 48–59, $5.50 at 60–79 and $5 at 80+ for a front logo up to 6,000 stitches. 3D puff adds $2–$5. We keep hat-front logos to a maximum of 2.25" tall so they sit right on the crown.

Blanks run about $6–$9 for a Yupoong 6606 and $9–$14 for a Richardson 112, so most embroidered trucker hats land at $14–$29 each. If you'd rather skip thread entirely, a laser-engraved leather patch is $8 per hat at 1–23, down to $4 at 192+. Winter crews: see our custom embroidered beanies.

Embroidery Cost per Stitch

Most shops price by the thousand stitches. The industry range is about $1–$3 per 1,000. Our base price already includes the first 6,000 stitches, and every 1,000 after that adds $0.50–$2 depending on quantity — the bigger the order, the lower the rate.

A rough guide to stitch counts: simple text 2,000–4,000, a typical left-chest or hat logo 5,000–8,000, a detailed emblem 10,000–15,000, and a full jacket back 30,000+. Your digitizer can usually trim stitches without hurting the look, which lowers the price on every piece.

Contract Embroidery Pricing (Customer-Supplied Garments)

Already have the garments? We embroider customer-supplied items — including premium hats like Melin — at the same embroidery rates above, plus a $2 per-item handling surcharge. It's charged per piece because customer goods arrive bagged, tagged and stickered, and every item has to be unpacked, inspected, prepped and repacked by hand.

One more thing to plan for: the industry-standard spoilage allowance on customer-supplied goods is about 4% across decorating methods. We aim for zero, but sending a couple of spares protects your final count.

Real-World Embroidery Pricing Examples

Here's what typical embroidery orders look like when everything is factored in:

Scenario Embroidery Blank Total/Piece
24 Yupoong 6606 truckers, front logo (6K stitches) $7.00 ~$7.50 ~$14.50
48 Richardson 112 hats, 3D puff logo (8K stitches) $8.50 ~$11 ~$19.50
36 polos, left-chest logo (7K stitches) $7.00 ~$21 ~$28
12 Carhartt K87 pocket tees, chest logo (6K stitches) $6.00 ~$21 ~$27
24 Carhartt beanies, cuff logo (4K stitches) $7.00 ~$22.50 ~$30

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does custom embroidery cost per item?

At Battle Born, embroidery up to 6,000 stitches is $12 a piece for 1–11 pieces, $6 at 12–47, $5.50 at 48–59, $4.50 at 60–79 and $4 at 80 and up, plus the garment cost. A standard left-chest logo with 5,000–8,000 stitches runs $6–$9 for the embroidery at 12–47 pieces. Hat embroidery with 3D puff adds $2–$5 on top. Garment pricing varies by brand — Yupoong 6606 truckers run $6–$9, Richardson 112 hats $9–$14, Carhartt beanies $18–$27. Digitizing is a one-time fee, from $18.99, saved for all future orders.

Is there a minimum order for custom embroidery?

Unlike screen printing, embroidery typically has no minimum order. At Battle Born, we embroider single pieces — one hat, one polo, one jacket. The per-piece cost is higher on single items because digitizing and setup are spread across fewer pieces, but there's no minimum to get started.

What is embroidery digitizing and does it cost extra?

Digitizing converts your logo into a stitch file the embroidery machine can read — mapping every stitch's direction, density, and sequence. At Battle Born, it starts at $18.99 for a standard hat or left-chest logo; complex, 3D puff and large designs cost more. Once digitized, the file is saved and reused for all future orders at no additional charge. This is where quality matters most — every file is hand-digitized by a professional digitizer rather than auto-digitize software, because a poorly digitized file produces messy results regardless of the machine.

Is embroidery more expensive than screen printing?

Per piece, embroidery costs more than screen printing for large flat designs. A 1-color screen print at 60 pieces costs about $2.80 per piece, while embroidery on the same quantity runs $6–$9 depending on stitch count. But embroidery has no minimum order, works on hats and structured garments, and produces a premium finish that outlasts any print method. For the full cost comparison, check our screen printing pricing guide.

How long does embroidered apparel last?

Embroidery is the most durable decoration method available. The design is stitched directly into the fabric with thread — it won't crack, peel, or fade like printed designs. A properly embroidered logo will outlast the garment itself. We've seen our embroidered workwear come back after years of mine shifts and outdoor abuse with the logos still looking sharp.

What is 3D puff embroidery and does it cost more?

3D puff uses foam under the stitching to create a raised, three-dimensional effect — the premium hat look you see on high-end caps. It adds $2–$5 per piece over flat embroidery due to additional setup and specialty foam. Works best on structured caps with bold lettering; fine detail doesn't translate well to puff.

How much does it cost to embroider a hat?

$13 a hat for 1–11, $7 at 12–47 and $5 at 80+ for a front logo up to 6,000 stitches, plus the hat (about $6–$14 for most trucker and Richardson 112 blanks). 3D puff adds $2–$5, and digitizing is a one-time fee from $18.99.

How much does embroidery cost per stitch?

Industry pricing runs about $1–$3 per 1,000 stitches. Our base price includes the first 6,000 stitches; each additional 1,000 adds $0.50–$2 depending on quantity.

Do you charge extra to embroider garments I supply?

Yes — a $2 per-item handling surcharge on top of standard embroidery pricing. Customer goods arrive bagged, tagged and stickered, so each piece has to be unpacked, inspected and prepped by hand. Plan for about 4% spoilage, the industry standard, and send a few spares.

What file format do I need for embroidery?

Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG, PDF) are ideal — they give the digitizer clean outlines and accurate colors. JPEGs and PNGs work too but may need additional art prep if the resolution is low. If you only have a low-res image, we can rebuild it as part of the digitizing process.

Can you embroider on any garment?

Most fabrics work great — cotton, polyester, twill, canvas, fleece, and denim are all excellent for embroidery. Very thin or stretchy fabrics need stabilizer backing. Leather and heavy duck canvas require specialty needles but produce fantastic results. Hats, polos, quarter-zips, jackets, beanies, bags, and towels are all standard items we embroider daily. For t-shirts, screen printing or DTF is almost always the better call — the embroidery cost usually exceeds the value of the garment. Browse our customizable products for options.
