Before you talk about going bigger, you need to know what came on the truck. The 5th gen 4Runner rolled out with three different factory wheel diameters depending on trim. Here is the full breakdown:

The factory +15mm offset pulls the wheel inward, which puts the tire closer to the upper control arm and the body mount. A lower offset (or negative) pushes the tire outward, away from the UCA and into the fender.
Most aftermarket 4Runner builds target 0 to −12mm offset. That is a mild amount of “poke” where the tire sits just outside the fender flare. More aggressive builds run −25 to −38mm offset but need fender flares or trimming to keep them street-legal.
Rule of thumb: For every mm of offset you lower from +15mm, you gain about 1mm of clearance between the tire and the UCA, and you lose about 1mm of clearance between the tire and the fender. Tire manufacturers publish nominal sizes but real-world measurements vary by up to half an inch between brands. A Falken Wildpeak 285/70R17 measures differently than a BFG KO2 in the same size. Check the actual diameter and section width on the manufacturer spec sheet before you order.
2. Wheel Offset
Stock 5th gen offset is +15mm (+4mm on TRD Pro). Aftermarket wheels typically run 0mm to −25mm offset. For every 10mm of reduced offset, you gain about 10mm outward poke. More poke = more fender clearance for the UCA, less clearance for the fender itself.
3. Suspension Height
A 2″ leveling kit gains roughly 1″ of clearance at the fender gap (because the wheel compresses less). A 3″ lift gains about 1.5″–2″. Lift on its own does not prevent rubbing during full compression on a trail; it just raises the static ride height.
Practical Tips Before You Buy
- Measure before you mount. Have your shop mount one tire first and check clearance at full lock and full compression before committing to the set.
- Start with mud flap delete. This is a 10-minute, zero-cost mod that eliminates 80% of the rubbing complaints on 285/70R17 setups.
- Use a heat gun on the liner. Before you cut anything, heat the inner fender liner and push it back with a 2x4. Plastic remembers its new shape.
- Factor in regear cost. Going from 31.6″ stock to 33s adds about 4.4% rolling diameter. Your 5VZ or 1GR has enough torque to pull it, but the transmission will downshift more on highway grades. Above 33s, regearing to 4.88 is worth the cost.
