Puff Print vs 3D Puff Embroidery: What Is Puff Print and When to Use It
Share
Short answer: "puff print" means two different things. Puff ink is a screen printing ink that rises when it is heat-cured, giving a soft raised print on shirts and hoodies. 3D puff embroidery stitches over a foam layer so the letters stand up off a cap. Puff ink suits apparel; 3D puff embroidery is the standard on hats, about $10 a hat at our shop.
Puff Ink vs 3D Puff Embroidery
| Puff screen print ink | 3D puff embroidery | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Plastisol ink with a foaming agent that expands in the dryer | Thread stitched over foam that is then torn away at the edges |
| Best on | Tees, hoodies, sweatshirts | Structured caps, beanies (small), jackets |
| Look | Soft, rounded, slightly matte raised print | Crisp, high-relief letters |
| Detail | Bold shapes and thick lines; fine detail fills in | Bold block letters; no small text or thin lines |
| Durability | Good; wash inside out | Excellent; lasts the life of the cap |
| Our price | Quoted as a specialty ink on top of the screen print rate | About $10 per hat (flat embroidery about $8) |
When Puff Ink Works
- Bold logos, block letters and thick outlines.
- One or two puff colors combined with flat ink for contrast.
- Cotton and cotton-blend fleece; it is a favorite on custom sweatshirts and hoodies.
More on specialty inks: puff, metallic and specialty inks and specialty print effects.
When 3D Puff Embroidery Works
- Structured caps with a firm front: YP Classics 6089M, Richardson 112, snapbacks and truckers.
- Letters at least about 1/4″ thick; thin script and small text should be flat embroidery.
- Not on soft dad hats or bucket hats, where the crown cannot hold the foam.
Compare: flat vs puff vs 3D foam embroidery.
