How to Apply a DTF Transfer at Home

Direct-to-film transfers are the easiest way to get a full-color, durable print onto a garment with a home heat press or iron. Here are the exact settings.

What you need

  • Your DTF transfer (printed film with the design)
  • A heat press (ideal) or a household iron on the hottest cotton setting
  • A blank garment — cotton, poly, or blends all work
  • Parchment paper or a Teflon sheet for the final press

Always follow the specific settings on your transfer — films vary by supplier. The numbers above are the common range.

Step by step

  1. Pre-press the garment for 5 seconds. This removes moisture and wrinkles so the transfer sits flat.
  2. Position the film print-side down where you want the design.
  3. Press at 300–315°F for 10–15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. With an iron, press hard and keep moving slightly to cover the whole design evenly.
  4. Peel the film — check whether your transfer is a hot or cold peel. Cold peel: wait until it is cool to the touch, then peel in one smooth motion.
  5. Do a final press for 5–10 seconds with parchment paper over the design to lock it in and add durability.
Pro tip: If edges lift after washing, you under-pressed or under-heated. Re-press with the parchment sheet for another 10 seconds.
