How to Wash & Dry Screen-Printed Shirts

Follow these steps and a properly cured print will outlast the shirt itself. Here is exactly how we tell our customers to care for custom apparel.

The 6 rules that keep prints looking new

  1. Wait 24 hours before the first wash. A freshly printed shirt is fully cured at the shop, but giving the ink a full day to finish setting never hurts.
  2. Turn the shirt inside out. This is the single most effective thing you can do. It keeps the print off the drum and away from zippers and abrasion.
  3. Wash cold, on a gentle cycle. Cold water (below 85°F) protects both the ink film and the garment color. Hot water is the enemy of a long-lasting print.
  4. Use mild detergent — skip the bleach and fabric softener. Bleach breaks down the ink and the fabric. Softeners leave a residue that dulls the print over time.
  5. Hang dry when you can, or tumble dry low. High heat in the dryer is the number-one cause of cracking on an otherwise good print.
  6. Never iron directly on the print. If you must iron, flip the shirt inside out or place a cloth over the design.

Why washing matters more than people think

A screen print is a thin film of plastisol or water-based ink bonded to the fabric. That bond is created by heat — we cure every print to roughly 320°F on a Workhorse conveyor dryer so the ink fully crosslinks. Once it is cured correctly, the print is durable. But heat, harsh chemicals, and mechanical abrasion in the laundry can still shorten its life. Cold water and low-heat drying simply give a good print the long life it was built for.
