Custom Straw Hats
Short answer: custom straw hats get a patch, not direct embroidery. We laser-engrave your logo into a leather patch (or build an embroidered or woven patch) and bond it to the front of the hat. Our go-to straw blank is the Richardson 827 Waterman, a natural straw ranch hat. Leather patches run $4 to $8 per hat plus the blank.
Straw hats are a summer staple for ranches, farms, landscaping crews, river outfitters, lifeguard stands and outdoor events. A good logo patch turns a plain straw hat into something your crew or your customers actually keep. Here is how we do it, and what to skip.
Why Straw Gets a Patch, Not Embroidery
Embroidery works because the machine can hoop a flat, stable panel and run thousands of stitches through it. Straw is the opposite. It is woven fiber, it is stiff, and the crown is curved. Needles cut the straw as they go in, and a dense logo can leave a perforated, weak spot right where your brand sits.
The manufacturer agrees. Richardson's spec page for the 827 Waterman lists patches and clip labels as the only decoration options and rules out direct embroidery. So we move the logo onto a patch, which we can make clean and sharp, and attach the patch to the hat.

Decoration Options on Straw
| Method | How it works | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Laser-engraved leather patch | Cut and engraved in house on our laser, then bonded to the crown front. Our specialty, and the best match for natural straw. | $4 to $8 per hat |
| Embroidered patch | Your logo stitched on a separate patch, then bonded to the hat. Good when you need thread colors. | Ask us |
| Woven patch | Finer detail than embroidery with a flatter, smoother face. | Ask us |
| Hat band or clip label | A branded band or small label instead of a front patch. | Ask us |
On fabric caps we offer a sewn-on leather patch for about $4 more. Sewing through straw has the same problem as embroidery, so on straw we bond the patch. More on patch types: custom leather patch hats, custom patches and woven vs embroidered vs leather patches.
Patch Size and Placement
- Front of the crown, centered above the brim, is the standard spot. It is the flattest part of the hat and the first thing people see.
- Distributor specs for the 827 put the maximum front patch at about 2.25 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide. We size your patch inside that so the edges sit flat.
- Rectangles, rounded rectangles, circles and shields all work. Wide, short shapes follow the crown curve best.
- Simple, bold art reads best from a distance. Fine lines and small text engrave well on leather, but keep text big enough to read across a parking lot.
What Custom Straw Hats Cost
Your price is the straw blank plus the patch. A laser-engraved leather patch is $4 to $8 per hat depending on size and quantity. If you end up mixing in fabric caps for the same crew, our hat rates are embroidery about $8, 3D puff about $10, and leather patch $4 to $8 plus $4 sewn on. Full rates are on our pricing page.
Standard turnaround is 10 to 14 business days from proof approval. Straw is a seasonal blank, so order early for summer events.
Sizing
The 827 is one size fits most, with a stretch sweatband and a drawcord to snug it down. If you are outfitting a crew with very large or very small heads, check our hat size chart and ask us about options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you embroider directly on a straw hat?
Not in a way we would put our name on. Embroidery needles punch through and split woven straw, and a straw crown cannot be hooped flat like a cap front. Richardson's own spec for the 827 Waterman lists patches and clip labels as the only decoration, so we put your logo on a patch and bond the patch to the hat.
What kind of patch works best on a straw hat?
A laser-engraved leather patch is the most popular choice. It matches the natural look of straw and holds fine detail. Embroidered and woven patches also work if you want thread colors in your logo.
How much do custom straw hats cost?
A laser-engraved leather patch runs $4 to $8 per hat, plus the straw blank. Straw blank pricing changes, so ask us and we will send a firm quote with current blank cost.
What size are the straw hats?
