The Nevada State Flag
More than just a blue field—it's our heritage in a single frame.
The Nevada state flag is one of the most striking in America — that bright cobalt blue field, the silver star, the sagebrush wreath, and the bold golden scroll that simply says “Battle Born”.
But why those two words? At Battle Born Clothing in Yerington, we live and breathe this design. It’s time to settle the score on what these symbols actually mean.

Features “Battle Born,” the nickname that defines us.
Why “Battle Born” Matters
Nevada’s official motto is “All for Our Country”, but “Battle Born” is the spirit we wear. It refers to our statehood on October 31, 1864—joining the Union during the height of the Civil War. We were forged in conflict, giving us a grit that defines the Northern Nevada lifestyle.

The Evolution of the 36th State Flag
Most folks don't realize that the flag we wear today wasn't our first. It took three tries and a $25 design contest to get it right.
The "Cluttered" Era: This version featured the entire state seal. It was beautiful but nearly impossible and expensive to mass-produce.
The Shellback Design: Louis Shellback III simplified the look, but the word "NEVADA" was spelled in a circle around the star, making it hard to read.
The Modern Standard: The Legislature moved "NEVADA" below the star, perfecting the legibility for the iconic look we use today.
The Man Behind the Motto: Louis Shellback III
Louis Shellback III was a worker, not a politician. In 1929, he created a design that could be recognized from a distance, whether you were in the depths of a Comstock mine or the high desert of Yerington. He gave us the "Battle Born" scroll—a reminder that Nevada is born from the fight.
