Custom Embroidered Tote Bags: Canvas, Sizing & When to Print

Custom Embroidered Tote Bags: Canvas, Sizing & When to Print

Totes are the most ordered branded bag in the country and the one most often decorated badly. Not because they're difficult — totes are the easiest bag to embroider, by a wide margin — but because the decision to embroider them is frequently the wrong one.

This guide covers when stitching a tote is the right call, when it isn't, and how to pick a blank that holds a logo properly.

Why totes are the easy one

Every other bag fights the hooping process. A tote hands it to you. The bag is open at the top, the front panel is a single unlined layer on most styles, and you can slide a hoop straight inside and close it around the panel from within.

That means true hooped embroidery with even tension and tight registration — the same quality you'd get on a polo, not the compromise you often accept on a structured pack.

Two things still get in the way:

  • Gusseted bottoms and boxed corners reduce how flat the panel will lie.
  • Small totes sometimes won't physically fit over the machine arm. Under roughly 12" wide, check before you commit to a quantity.

The honest part: embroidery is often wrong for totes

We'd rather tell you this before you pay than after.

A tote is usually bought for one of two jobs, and they pull in opposite directions:

If the job is... Then choose... Because
Volume giveaway, big multi-colour graphic, low unit cost Screen print or DTF A 10" full-colour graphic in thread would run tens of thousands of stitches and cost more than the bag
Premium gift, retail sale, repeat-carry item Embroidery Stitching reads as quality, survives years of use and justifies a higher price

The rule of thumb: embroidery suits a compact mark on a good bag; print suits a big graphic on a cheap one. If your artwork is a 4" logo, stitch it. If it's a full-front illustration, print it — our DTF transfers have no minimum and handle full colour easily.

"We turn down more tote embroidery than we accept. Someone brings in a full-colour design nine inches wide for a 200-piece giveaway, and the honest answer is that the thread would cost more than the bags. Print it, spend the difference on a heavier canvas, and everybody ends up happier."

Canvas weight is the whole decision

Cotton canvas is graded in ounces per square yard, and it is the single biggest factor in how an embroidered tote turns out.

Weight Feel Embroidery verdict
~5–6 oz Light, floppy, cheapest Poor. Too thin to support stitches; puckers. Print these.
~8–10 oz Holds its shape, everyday Good. The sweet spot for most embroidered totes.
~12 oz and up Stands on its own, premium Excellent. Takes dense stitching without distortion.

If someone quotes you an embroidered tote and can't tell you the canvas weight, that's a flag. On anything under 8 oz we'll either recommend a heavier blank or suggest printing instead.

Blanks worth knowing

Through S&S Activewear:

  • Liberty Bags — the broadest canvas tote range in the industry, from light promo weights up to heavy shoppers. Our default for embroidered canvas.
  • Q-Tees — strong value canvas, wide colour selection, good gusseted options.
  • BAGedge — polyester and poly-canvas totes, more structured.
  • econscious and OAD — organic and recycled cotton for sustainability-minded programs.
  • DRI DUCK — heavyweight rugged canvas with a workwear feel.

Through SanMar, Port Authority covers structured and laminated totes, grocery totes and cooler totes, and Carhartt brings duck canvas totes that embroider beautifully once the density is dialled in — see our Carhartt bags guide.

Design and placement

  • Size: 4–8" wide, centred between the handles. Larger than 8" and the stitch count starts outrunning the value of the bag.
  • Vertical position: centre the design in the panel, or slightly above centre. A logo sitting low looks like it slipped.
  • Clear the handles. Handle attachment points are multi-layer and will not hoop. Leave at least an inch.
  • Mind the gusset seam on boxed-bottom totes.
  • Lettering at 0.25" and up. Canvas texture eats anything smaller.
  • Three or four thread colours. Let the canvas be your background — don't stitch a fill behind the logo.

Canvas is stable enough that a light tear-away backing is all most totes need. Heavier duck often needs nothing more than good underlay.

Where embroidered totes earn their keep

  • Retail and boutique. A stitched logo on 12 oz canvas supports a real price tag. Printed totes don't.
  • Client and executive gifts. Reads as considered rather than promotional.
  • Farmers markets and makers. Heavy canvas plus a compact stitched mark is exactly the aesthetic.
  • Wedding and event welcome bags. Small monograms are cheap in thread and look expensive.
  • Staff and volunteer kits. Survives years, unlike a print on a 5 oz bag.

Frequently asked questions

Is embroidery or printing better on a tote bag?
Embroidery for compact logos on heavier canvas and anything premium. Printing for large, colourful graphics and high-volume giveaways. The deciding factors are design size and bag quality, not preference.

What canvas weight should I choose for embroidery?
8 oz minimum, 10–12 oz preferred. Lighter canvas can't support stitching without puckering.

How large can an embroidered logo be on a tote?
4–8" wide is standard. Bigger is physically possible but stitch count and cost climb quickly, and past a point printing simply makes more sense.

Can you embroider a tote that's already lined?
Usually yes — a lined tote still opens at the top, so we can get a hoop between the layers. Fully sewn-shut lined panels are the exception and may need a clamp.

Do embroidered totes shrink or fade when washed?
Untreated cotton canvas shrinks somewhat on first wash. Cold water, gentle cycle, air dry. We use polyester thread, which holds colour far better than rayon. See our care guide.

What's the minimum order?
Low, since there are no screens to burn. Digitizing your logo is a one-time charge; after that reorders run off the existing file.
