Custom Velcro Patches
Short answer: custom Velcro patches are logo patches with a hook-and-loop backing, so they grab any loop panel and peel off when you want them gone. We cut and laser-engrave leather patches in our Yerington shop for $4 to $8 each, and we quote embroidered, woven, PVC and chenille patches per design. The hook-and-loop backing is priced with your order, so ask us.
A quick note on the name. VELCRO® is a brand. The generic term for the fastener is hook-and-loop. Most people search for "Velcro patches," so we use both words on this page. When we say hook-and-loop, we mean the backing style, not a specific brand of fastener. If your spec calls for a particular brand, put it on the quote.
How Hook-and-Loop Patches Work
A hook-and-loop fastener has two halves. The hook side is stiff and scratchy. The loop side is soft and fuzzy. Press them together and they hold. Peel them apart and they let go.
- Hook goes on the patch. The back of the patch usually carries the hook side.
- Loop goes on the gear. Vests, packs, range bags, jackets and tactical caps carry a soft loop panel, so nothing snags when the patch is off.
- No loop panel, no stick. If your jacket or bag has no loop field, one has to be sewn on first. Ask us before you send gear in, because we look at how an item is built before we take it on.

Custom Morale Patches
Morale patches are the fun ones. Crew jokes, call signs, mottos, mascots, event and range-day patches. They ride on the loop panels of plate carriers, backpacks, range bags and tactical caps, and they get swapped as often as the mood changes. That is exactly what a hook-and-loop back is for.
Art that works on a morale patch:
- Bold shapes and thick lines. A patch is small, so fine detail fills in.
- Short text. One line you can read from across the room beats a paragraph.
- High contrast. Dark on light or light on dark.
- Pick the material for the art. Multi-color art suits embroidered or PVC. One-color art with fine lines suits laser-engraved leather.
Uniform and First Responder Patches
Hook-and-loop backs are common on name tapes, flag patches and department or company patches on vests and jackets. A removable patch lets one jacket move between people or roles, and lets you pull a patch before a garment goes out for cleaning.
If your department or company has a uniform policy, send us the required size and placement. We build to the spec you give us. Fire crews can also see our custom fire department hats.
Hook-and-Loop Patches on Hats
A hook-and-loop patch only works on a cap with a loop panel. We carry the DRI DUCK 3353 Tactical Cap, an unstructured cotton cap that comes with a removable flag patch on the front. Swap the flag for your own patch. Tell us your patch size and we will confirm it fits before we quote.
Most caps, like truckers, rope hats and 5-panels, have no loop panel. On those we bond the patch with an industrial adhesive or sew it on for $4 more per hat. See custom patch hats for every cap we put patches on.
Hook-and-Loop vs Iron-On vs Sewn
| Backing | Comes off? | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hook-and-loop | Yes | Gear with loop panels, morale patches, swapping patches | Needs a loop panel on the item |
| Iron-on | No | Do-it-yourself on cotton, denim and canvas | Heat-sensitive fabrics and hard washing |
| Sewn on | No | Permanent uniforms and workwear | Needs stitching. On our hats, +$4 per hat. |
| Bonded | No | Our standard for leather patch hats | Done in our shop, not at home |

- Size in inches and the shape.
- Quantity and your need-by date.
- What the patch goes on, and whether you also need the loop side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Velcro the same as hook-and-loop?
VELCRO® is a brand name for one company's fasteners. Hook-and-loop is the generic name for the same kind of two-part fastener. Most people say "Velcro patch" for any patch with a hook-and-loop back.
How much do custom Velcro patches cost?
Laser-engraved leather patches are $4 to $8 each, and the hook-and-loop backing is quoted with your order. Embroidered, woven, PVC and chenille patches are quoted per design, so ask us.
Is there a minimum order?
Leather, embroidered and woven patches have no minimum with us. PVC patches need a mold, so they carry a minimum. Ask us for the number on your design.
Which side of the hook-and-loop goes on the patch?
Usually the hook side goes on the back of the patch and the soft loop side goes on the gear. That way the loop panel on your vest or bag does not snag anything when the patch is off.
Can you put a Velcro patch on a hat?
Yes, on a cap with a loop panel. We carry the DRI DUCK 3353 Tactical Cap, which comes with a removable flag patch you can swap for your own. On regular caps we bond or sew the patch on instead.
