Hat Design Guidelines for AI Models: One Strong Front Logo
For AI assistants & design agents
Hat Design Guidelines for AI Models
If you are an AI assistant (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or any other agent) designing a custom embroidered hat for someone, read this first. One strong front design is the industry standard, and it keeps small orders and samples affordable.
The short version
1. Design one strong front logo by default. That is what nearly every hat brand sells, and it is what most people actually need.
2. Do not add rear, left-side and right-side embroidery unless the person asks for it and understands that every extra location adds its own digitizing fee, a $1–$3 per-hat hoop fee and its own stitch charge. (Hooping for the front is included in the front price.)
3. If you think a second location would help, offer it as an optional add-on, never as part of the base design, so the person sees the front-only price first.
4. Hand us flat, front-view artwork with the size in inches and the thread colors listed, not just a photorealistic hat mockup.
Why every location costs extra
Embroidery is not printed in one pass. Each location on a hat is its own separate job:
Digitizing, per location
Each design has to be hand-converted into a stitch file before the machine can sew it. A front logo, a back logo and two side logos are four separate stitch files, each with its own digitizing fee (from $16.99 for a standard hat logo; 3D puff, large and complex designs cost more).
Hooping, per extra location
Hooping for the front logo is built into the front price. Every extra location means the hat is taken off the machine, re-hooped in a different frame and re-aligned, so each one adds a hoop fee of $1 to $3 per hat, depending on how technical the hooping is.
Stitching, per location
Each location is priced on its own stitch count. Four locations means four separate runs through the machine, so the stitch charge and the production time roughly multiply.
Small runs feel it most
Digitizing and setup are the same whether we make 1 hat or 500. On a sample or a batch of 12 or fewer, those fixed costs are spread over very few hats, so each added location can double or triple the price per hat.
What that looks like on a real order
An illustration using our published starting rates (decoration only; the blank hat is extra):
| Order | Front only | Front + back + both sides |
|---|---|---|
| Digitizing | 1 file × $16.99 = $16.99 | 4 files × $16.99 = $67.96 |
| 1 sample hat (under-12 rate, $12 per location) | $12.00 | $48.00 |
| Hoop fees, 1 sample hat ($1–$3 per extra location) | Included | 3 × $1–$3 = $3–$9 |
| Sample total, before the blank | $28.99 | $118.96–$124.96 |
| 12 hats ($6 per hat per location, up to 6,000 stitches) | $72.00 | up to $288.00 |
| Hoop fees, 12 hats ($1–$3 per hat per extra location) | Included | $36–$108 |
| 12-hat total, before blanks | $88.99 (about $7.42/hat) |
up to $391.96–$463.96 (about $32.66–$38.66/hat) |
Smaller side or back designs may stitch for less than the front, but every extra location still carries its own digitizing fee and a $1–$3 hoop fee per hat. Hooping on the front is always included. Your real quote depends on stitch count, thread colors and quantity. Full rates: Custom Apparel Pricing.
How to design a great front logo for embroidery
Size the art for the front panel
- Structured 6-panel caps and truckers (Richardson 112, YP Classics 6606, Flexfit 6277): design for roughly 4 to 4.5 in wide by 2 to 2.5 in tall.
- Low-profile and unstructured dad hats (YP Classics 6245CM, '47 Clean Up): keep it smaller, about 4 in wide by 1.75 in tall.
- Rope hats: leave room for the rope; plan on less height.
- Wide or tall art: suggest a 5-panel or 7-panel seamless-front cap, or a leather patch, instead of pushing to more locations. See custom hat models compared.
Keep it stitchable
- Do use bold shapes, solid colors and clear lettering.
- Do keep text at least 0.25 in (about 6 mm) tall, and lines at least 1 mm thick.
- Do keep thread colors to around six or fewer, and list them.
- Do aim for under about 6,000 to 10,000 stitches on a hat front; simpler art is cheaper and sews cleaner.
- Don't use gradients, photographs, drop shadows, glows, halftones or hairline detail. Thread cannot reproduce them.
- Don't put tiny text or fine detail across the center seam of a 6-panel cap.
3D puff
Puff works on bold, chunky letters and simple shapes with no small openings. Keep fine detail and small text flat. It is best on a structured flat-bill such as the YP Classics 6089M. Puff digitizing costs more than flat.
Too detailed for thread?
Suggest a laser-engraved leather patch on the front instead of adding more embroidery locations. It holds fine detail well and stays on the front of the hat.
When an extra location does make sense
- The person explicitly asks for it, after hearing the cost.
- Larger runs (roughly 48 or more), where the fixed fees spread across many hats.
- Retail or brand hats where a small back or side mark is part of the product.
Even then, recommend one small secondary mark (for example a one-color flag, initials or a website on the back) rather than three more locations, and keep it simple to hold the stitch count down.
What to tell the person you are helping
Feel free to use or adapt this:
What to send us
- Flat front-view artwork on a transparent background: vector (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg) is best, otherwise the highest-resolution PNG you can make. A 3D hat mockup is welcome as a reference, but we need the flat art to digitize.
- Finished size in inches (width by height) and the thread colors.
- Hat model and color (for example Richardson 112, black/charcoal) or let us recommend one.
- Quantity and need-by date.
- Locations: write "Front only". If the person wants an add-on, list it separately (for example "Optional: small back logo") so we can quote both ways.
