Carhartt vs Berne: Which Workwear Brand Is Better for Your Crew?
Share
Short answer: both make real duck canvas workwear for people who wear it out. Carhartt is the bigger, better known name and usually costs more. Berne is a smaller family brand from Indiana that tends to come in cheaper on similar styles. For a crew that needs logos on its gear, Carhartt is easier: we stock it and embroider it in house. We do not carry Berne, but we can stitch Berne your crew already owns.
Where Each Brand Comes From
Carhartt was founded in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt. The company says it is still family owned and run by his descendants, with headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Around 1900 it was building overalls for railroad workers (source: Carhartt newsroom).
Berne started in 1915 in Berne, Indiana, a small Swiss community, as the Berne Overall & Shirt Company. It made bibs and work shirts for farmers. Berne says it is still family owned three generations later (source: Berne Apparel).
So both are old, family owned American workwear brands that started with overalls. The difference today is size and reach. Carhartt is far more widely sold. Berne is the smaller brand.

Duck Jackets
This is the matchup most people mean. The Carhartt Active Jac and the Berne Heritage Duck Hooded Active Work Jacket are the same idea: a hooded, insulated duck work jacket.
On paper, the Carhartt shell is heavier: Carhartt lists 12 oz washed duck, Berne lists 10 oz duck. Berne's jacket listed for about $45 less in the base sizes. Berne offers Regular sizes XS to 6XL plus Talls, so big and tall guys are covered. Heavier duck is stiffer at first and takes longer to break in. Lighter duck moves easier out of the box.
Which is better? If your crew beats on its coats every day and wants the name, Carhartt. If you are outfitting a lot of people on a tight budget, Berne is a fair pick. We carry the Carhartt Washed Duck Active Jac and the Carhartt Duck Detroit Jacket for embroidery.
Hoodies and Sweatshirts
The Carhartt K121 Loose Fit Midweight hoodie is 10.5 oz in most colors. The Berne SP400 Heritage Hooded Pullover is lighter at 9 oz, in a 60/40 cotton/poly blend, and costs about $20 less.
Both work fine as a daily layer. The Carhartt is heavier and labeled Loose Fit, so it layers over a work shirt. For decorated crew hoodies, see our custom Carhartt hoodies page.
Bibs and Overalls
Bibs are where both brands started. Carhartt's R01 is the classic unlined duck bib in a Relaxed Fit. Berne's bib lineup on its site leans toward insulated duck bibs for cold weather. They are not apples to apples, so compare the same type: unlined for summer and layering, insulated for winter.
Fit and Sizing
Carhartt labels its cuts by name, such as Loose Fit and Relaxed Fit, and they do not fit the same. Always check the fit name on the exact style before you order a crew, because two Carhartt jackets in the same size can fit differently.
Berne did not publish a fit name on the jacket and hoodie pages we checked. It does offer Regular and Tall lengths and links a size guide. If your crew is mixed, order one of each size before the full run. That rule works for either brand.
Which Is Better for Embroidery?
Both brands take embroidery well. Duck canvas and heavy fleece are stable fabrics that hold a clean left chest logo. What changes is how easy it is to get the garments:
- Carhartt: we order it from our distributor, match sizes and colors for your whole crew, and stitch it in house. See custom Carhartt workwear.
- Berne: we do not stock it. If your crew already owns Berne, you can bring or ship it in and we will embroider it. Our FAQ covers customer-supplied garments: we are happy to do it, but we cannot guarantee results on garments we did not source, since we cannot verify the fabric beforehand.
Embroidery on workwear starts at about $6 a piece for 12 to 47 pieces and about $5.50 at 48 and up, plus a one-time digitizing fee from $16.99. More on stitching Carhartt in our Carhartt embroidery guide, and a wider brand comparison in best workwear brands for custom embroidery.
The Bottom Line
- Pick Carhartt if you want the heavier duck, the well-known name, and logo gear we can source and decorate start to finish.
- Pick Berne if price matters most and you are fine buying the garments yourself.
- Already own Berne? Send it in and we can embroider it.
