Leather Patch Trucker Caps: Choosing Between the Richardson 112, 6606 and 6609

Leather patch caps are the single most requested thing that leaves our laser. They read premium, they survive hard use, and a patch carries fine detail that thread simply cannot hold at that size.

What people rarely think about is that the cap decides the patch, not the other way round. Profile and bill shape set how much flat, usable panel you have to work with.

“A patch that is a quarter inch too tall stops looking designed and starts looking like it was stuck on. The cap sets the ceiling.”

— Battle Born Clothing, Yerington NV

How much room each cap gives you

All three are structured six-panels, so the front holds its shape and gives the patch a stable, flat bed. The usable area is what differs.

Patch shapes that work Wide rectangle, oval, rounded rectangle. Wide rectangle, oval, shield. Tall rectangle, shield, large circle, stacked lockups.

A practical rule from our bench: on a mid-profile cap like the 112 or 6606, a patch much over two inches tall starts to crowd the seam and curl at the top edge. On the high-profile 6609 you have meaningfully more headroom before that happens.

Leather, and what actually engraves well

We laser-engrave the patch rather than emboss it, which burns the artwork into the surface instead of pressing it in. That gives crisp edges on small type and holds fine linework that would blur in a stamped patch.

  • Veg-tan leather darkens richly under the laser and gives the highest contrast. It is the classic look.
  • Faux and vegan leathers engrave cleanly, cost less and behave more consistently batch to batch. They are the better call for a large run that has to match exactly.
  • Very dark leathers fight you. The engrave is a burn, so on near-black stock there is little contrast left to see. If you want dark, we would rather run a dark cap with a mid-tone patch.

Artwork-wise, simple beats busy. Bold shapes, solid type and generous negative space survive at patch scale. Fine gradients, thin serifs under about eight points and heavy drop shadows do not.

Adhesive, stitching, or both

Our standard patch is bonded with an industrial adhesive, and across several years and many thousands of hats we have yet to see one let go, including caps that ride on Nevada dashboards all summer. Sewing is an option for $4 more per hat when you want the visible stitch line.

Stitched patches read a little more handmade, and some brands want that visible stitch line as part of the look.

One trade-off to know: stitching commits the patch permanently and the needle line shows on the inside of the crown. On a very thin or very soft leather, stitching can also pull slightly at the corners. We will tell you if your chosen stock is one of those.

Where the cap choice actually lands

  • 112 — the safe, classic proportion, and the one to pick if you need a specific brand colour or an XL for larger heads.
  • 6606 — same patch geometry as the 112 in practice, but choose it when you want a camo cap under the patch. A leather patch on Kryptek or Multicam is a strong combination.
  • 6609 — the one to pick when the patch is the design. Flat bill, tall panel, room for a statement.

Frequently asked questions

What size leather patch fits a Richardson 112?

On a mid-profile cap like the 112, patches much over two inches tall start to crowd the front seam and can curl at the top edge. Wider proportions work better. The high-profile Yupoong 6609 gives you more vertical room if you need a taller patch.

Are leather patches sewn on or glued?

Bonded with an industrial adhesive as standard. It has yet to fail across several years and many thousands of hats. If you want the stitched look, we sew it on for $4 more per hat.

What kind of leather engraves best?

Veg-tan leather darkens richly and gives the highest contrast. Faux and vegan leathers engrave cleanly and stay more consistent across a large run. Very dark leather is the one to avoid, because the engrave is a burn and there is little contrast left to see.

Can you put a leather patch on a camo cap?

Yes. The Yupoong 6606 is the cap to use for that, because it is stocked in licensed Kryptek, Multicam and Veil patterns. A mid-tone leather patch over camo reads very well.

Is there a minimum for leather patch hats?

No minimum. We laser and apply patches in our own shop, so a single cap is a real order. Turnaround is 10 to 14 business days from an approved proof.
