Sizing Custom Caps for a Whole Crew: One Size Does Not Fit Everyone

Nearly every trucker cap sold is described as one size fits most. The word doing the work in that sentence is “most”.

Snapbacks adjust over a genuinely wide range, and for most people they are fine. The problem shows up on a crew order, where the two or three people at the top of the range end up wearing a cap that sits high and pinches all day, and quietly stop wearing it.

“The caps that end up in a truck door pocket are almost always the ones that did not fit the person they were handed to.”

The Richardson 112 is the only one of the three with a true size split, and it is the main practical reason we steer crew orders toward it.

The XL catch

The 112 XL exists, but not across the full colour range. In the US it is stocked in black, black/charcoal, heather grey/black, heather grey/white and navy.

That has a real consequence: if your company colour is red and you need XL caps, you cannot have both. The usual solutions are to run the whole crew in one of the XL-available colours, or to accept that the XL caps are a different colourway with the same decoration. Neither is wrong, but it is far better to decide it before we order blanks than after.

Also worth knowing: Richardson has been rolling over the label from OSFM to MD-LG. The fit did not change, only the sticker, so mixed inventory is normal and not a sign you received the wrong thing.

Youth caps

For schools, leagues, youth programmes and family events, the 112Y is the youth version of the 112. It matters because it lets the kids’ caps match the adults’ caps exactly — same silhouette, same decoration, scaled down.

Neither Yupoong has a youth equivalent in this family, so a mixed adult-and-youth order effectively selects the Richardson line.

If your order includes youth sizes, flag it on the quote form. It changes which blanks we source and occasionally the decoration size, because a front panel that fits an adult logo can be too small on a youth cap.

How to order for a crew without guessing

  • Ask, do not estimate. A one-line message to the crew asking who needs an XL takes a day and saves a reorder.
  • Order a few spares. New starters, lost caps, and the one that goes under a truck tyre. Ten percent over is a reasonable buffer.
  • Keep the file on record. We store your digitised artwork, so a top-up run of five caps months later is straightforward and does not repeat the setup.
  • Decide the colour split early if XL is involved, for the reason above.

For crews that reorder regularly, an ongoing uniform programme is usually simpler than treating every top-up as a fresh order.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Richardson 112 come in different sizes?

Yes. The 112 comes in M/L and XL, which makes it unusual among trucker caps. Both the Yupoong 6606 and 6609 are one size adjustable.

What colours does the Richardson 112 XL come in?

In the US the XL is stocked in a limited run: black, black/charcoal, heather grey/black, heather grey/white and navy. If you need XL in a specific brand colour, that constraint usually decides the colour for the whole order.

Is there a youth trucker cap that matches the 112?

Yes, the 112Y is the youth version of the Richardson 112, so youth and adult caps can match exactly. Neither Yupoong has a youth equivalent in this family.

Why does my cap label say MD-LG instead of OSFM?

Richardson has been rolling the label over from OSFM to MD-LG. The actual size and fit did not change, only the sticker, so mixed inventory during the changeover is normal.

How many spare caps should I order for a crew?

About ten percent over your head count is a sensible buffer for new starters and losses. We keep your artwork file on record, so a small top-up run later does not repeat the setup.
