Custom PVC Patches: Molded Rubber Patches for Hats, Packs and Uniforms
Short answer: a custom PVC patch is your logo molded in soft, flexible rubber (PVC), with raised and recessed areas in solid colors. It is waterproof, holds fine edges well and does not fray, which is why it shows up on tactical caps, packs and outdoor gear. PVC patches need a custom mold, so they carry a minimum and we quote them per design. We can put a hook-and-loop or sew-on back on them and attach them to the hats, jackets and bags we decorate for you.
How PVC Patches Are Made
- Art is separated by color. Each color in your logo becomes its own area of the mold, so PVC works best with solid colors, not photos or gradients.
- A mold is cut. The mold sets which parts of the design stand up and which sit lower. That one-time mold is why PVC has a minimum.
- Liquid PVC is filled and cured. Colors are filled into the mold and set with heat.
- The back is added. Hook-and-loop for swapping on and off, or a sew-on back for a permanent patch.
PVC vs Other Patch Types
| Patch | Look | Weather | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC | Raised rubber, crisp edges, solid colors | Waterproof, wipes clean | Yes, because of the mold |
| Leather | Laser-engraved, one-color burn, rugged | Ages with wear | None. Cut in our shop, $4 to $8 each |
| Embroidered | Raised thread, classic uniform look | Fine, can fuzz over time | None with us |
| Woven | Flat, fine detail and small text | Fine | None with us |
| Chenille | Fuzzy varsity loops | Keep it dry | Quoted per design |
If you want a rugged patch with no minimum, a laser-engraved leather patch is usually the faster, cheaper route. PVC wins when you need multiple colors, a waterproof patch or a raised molded look. For the full rundown, read which patch type belongs on your cap.
Where PVC Patches Work Best
- Tactical and range caps. Caps with a loop panel take a hook-backed PVC patch you can swap out. See custom Velcro patches.
- Packs, range bags and cooler bags. Rubber shrugs off rain, dirt and sunscreen. See custom backpacks.
- Work jackets and vests. A sewn PVC patch reads clearly from across a job site.
- Trucker hats. A sewn PVC patch on a Richardson 112 or 5-panel cap is a popular brand-merch look.
Art Tips for PVC
- Use solid colors. Gradients and photos do not mold.
- Keep lines and text thick enough to fill. Very thin strokes can break or blur.
- Send vector art (.ai, .eps, .pdf or .svg) if you have it. If not, our design team can redraw it.
Custom PVC Patch FAQ
What is a PVC patch? A patch molded from soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rubber, with your design raised in solid colors. It is flexible, waterproof and does not fray.
How much do custom PVC patches cost? We quote them per design. The price depends on size, number of colors, backing and quantity, and the mold is spread across the order, so bigger runs cost less per patch.
Is there a minimum? Yes, because each design needs its own mold. Send your art and we will give you the minimum for your design.
PVC or leather? Leather has no minimum and a rugged, one-color look. PVC handles multiple colors and water better.
Can you put PVC patches on hats? Yes. We sew them onto caps, or use a hook-and-loop back on caps with a loop panel.
