How to Care for a Custom Trucker Cap Without Wrecking It

A structured trucker cap is a stiffened front panel, a mesh back, a moulded bill and, often, decoration that was applied with heat. Most of the ways people clean hats attack at least one of those.

This is what we tell customers who want a cap to still look right in two years.

“Heat is what kills caps. Hot water, hot dryers, hot dashboards. Keep the heat out and everything else is survivable.”

— Battle Born Clothing, Yerington NV

The short answer

  • Spot clean first. Most caps never need more.
  • Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent when they do.
  • Never the dryer. Never the dishwasher, whatever the internet says.
  • Air dry on something cap-shaped so the crown holds its form.
  • Keep it out of a hot vehicle for days on end.

Why not the dishwasher

The dishwasher advice circulates constantly and it is wrong for every cap we sell. Dishwasher cycles run hot, the detergent is aggressive and alkaline, and the drying element is hotter still.

  • Heat softens the buckram stiffener in the front panel, and the crown never fully recovers.
  • Heat can release the adhesive under a leather or PVC patch.
  • Heat is exactly what makes a DTF transfer lift at the edges.
  • Alkaline detergent strips the finish off veg-tan leather.

Washing by decoration type

Embroidered caps

The most robust of the lot. Cool hand wash, mild detergent, gentle agitation with a soft brush on the soiled area. Do not scrub across the stitching, work with it. Rinse cool and air dry.

Leather patch caps

Keep the patch as dry as you reasonably can. Wash around it, and if the patch does get wet, blot it and let it dry away from direct heat. Veg-tan leather will darken with water and mostly returns as it dries. A little leather conditioner once or twice a year keeps it from drying out and cracking — that matters more in Nevada than almost anywhere.

DTF and printed caps

Cool water only, and no direct heat on the transfer. Do not iron it, and do not put it anywhere a press or a dryer will reach it. Turn the cap so the transfer is not rubbing against anything abrasive while it dries.

Woven labels and PVC patches

Both are effectively waterproof and the least fussy. Cool wash, air dry, done.

Holding the shape

The reason caps end up looking tired is almost never dirt. It is a collapsed crown and a bent bill.

  • Dry it over something round — a cap form, a balled towel, a coffee tin. Anything that keeps the crown up.
  • Do not crush it in a bag while damp.
  • Reshape the bill with your hands while it is still slightly damp, not once it has dried in the wrong shape.
  • Store it on a shelf or a hook rather than under other gear.

The poly-rich Yupoong fronts hold their shape and colour slightly better through repeated washing than the cotton-rich 112, which is one genuine advantage they have. The trade-off is that the 112 breaks in softer and gets that worn look people actually want.

Sun, sweat and dashboards

In the high desert, UV does more damage to a cap than washing ever will. Dark colours fade, and a cap left on a dashboard for a summer is being slowly heat-treated.

Sweat is the other one. Salt is abrasive and it wicks into the sweatband, so a crew cap worn daily benefits from a rinse of the band far more often than a full wash of the cap.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a custom cap in the washing machine?

We do not recommend it. Machine agitation and heat soften the stiffener in the front panel and can lift patches and transfers. Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, and air dry on something that holds the crown shape.

Can I wash a hat in the dishwasher?

No. Dishwasher cycles run hot with aggressive alkaline detergent and a hot drying element. That combination softens the buckram in the crown, can release patch adhesive, lifts DTF transfers and strips the finish off leather.

How do I clean a leather patch hat?

Wash around the patch and keep it as dry as you can. If it gets wet, blot it and let it dry away from direct heat. Veg-tan leather darkens with water and mostly recovers. A little leather conditioner once or twice a year prevents drying and cracking, which matters in a dry climate.

How do I stop my cap losing its shape?

Dry it over something round such as a cap form, a balled towel or a tin, reshape the bill while it is still slightly damp, and never crush it in a bag while wet. A collapsed crown, not dirt, is what makes a cap look worn out.

Will a printed cap survive washing?

Yes, in cool water with no direct heat on the transfer. Do not iron it and keep it out of the dryer. Embroidery and stitched patches are more durable than transfers if the cap is for hard daily wear.
