What Is Screen Printing? How Silk Screen Printing Works (2026 Guide)
Share
Short answer: screen printing (also called silk screen printing) pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil onto a shirt, one color and one screen at a time. It gives the brightest, most durable prints and the lowest price per shirt on runs of about 24 or more. At our shop a one-color print on a light shirt is $4.85 each at 24 pieces and $2.38 at 120, plus $20 per screen.
How Screen Printing Works, Step by Step
- Separate the art. Each ink color becomes its own black-and-white film. Photos and gradients are converted to halftones (halftone and simulated process guide).
- Coat and expose the screen. A mesh screen is coated with light-sensitive emulsion, the film is laid on top, and UV light hardens everything except the design (emulsion and exposure guide). Mesh count controls detail and ink deposit (mesh count guide).
- Set up the press. Screens are locked into a press and registered so each color lands exactly where it should.
- Print. A squeegee pulls ink across the screen, pushing it through the open mesh onto the garment. Darks usually get a white underbase first.
- Cure. Shirts run through a conveyor dryer so the ink bonds permanently (ink curing guide).
Why Is It Called Silk Screen Printing?
The screens were originally made of silk. Today they are polyester mesh, but "silk screen" stuck as a name. Silk screening, serigraphy and screen printing all mean the same process.
Inks: Plastisol, Water-Based and Discharge
| Ink | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Plastisol | Slightly raised, bright and opaque | Most jobs; bold colors on any shirt |
| Water-based | Soft; soaks into the fabric | Retail feel on light and cotton shirts |
| Discharge | Soft; removes the shirt dye and replaces it | Bright prints on dark 100% cotton |
| Low-bleed | Like plastisol | Polyester performance wear, so the dye does not bleed through |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is screen printing in simple terms?
It is a stencil method: ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen that is blocked everywhere except your design, one color at a time, then heat-cured onto the shirt.
Is silk screen printing the same as screen printing?
Yes. Screens used to be made of silk; now they are polyester mesh. The process is the same.
How long does screen printing last?
A properly cured plastisol print usually outlasts the shirt. Wash inside out in cold water and tumble dry low.
What is the minimum for screen printing?
We have no hard minimum, but screen printing is most cost-effective from about 24 pieces. Below that, DTF is often cheaper.
Can you screen print AI-generated designs?
Yes. Send the highest-resolution file you have. If it needs redrawing as clean vector art for screens, our design team can do it.
